EPDM

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

EPDM is superior to others in flexibility, elongation, uv resistance and hail damage resistance. On average, a building in the United States consumes almost 5 times more energy in heating than in cooling according to a study published in the Journal of Climate. Dark colored EPDM is most common and saves on heating costs. Though it can be found in white which saves on cooling costs. EPDM comes in 45, 60 and 90 mil thicknesses.

Advantages:
  • More flexible than other membranes
  • Can help lower heating costs
  • Dries quicker than light colored roofs
Limitations:
  • Not resistant to grease  & animal fats
  • Raises cooling costs

PVC

Polyvinyl Chloride

FLEECEBACK

Using the Rapid Lock system on our shop in Middleton, ID

Having a fleece back provides extra reinforcement to the membrane, providing superior durability and protection. The best reason for a fleece back membrane is the exceptional puncture resistance that is great for any project.

Rapid Lock System

The rapid lock system provides a new way to secure each type of membrane to the deck. The main ways to attach membrane has always been fully adhered or mechanically attached. This new system provides the best of both worlds where you secure the special insulation down with screws and fasteners and then uses VELCRO Brand Securable Solutions. The insulation has a VELCRO on the top side which then attaches firmly to the fleece backing of the membranes. This system provides a fully adhered system without the use of adhesives. It saves on labor cost up to 80 percent compared to a traditional bonding adhesive. Perfect for when the weather is too cold for adhesives to dry or for when temperatures are making adhesives dry too fast. This system is not limited by weather conditions as much as other systems.

WALKING SURFACE

Any membrane can be walked on, but how well does it hold up? Does it have a slick surface or grip? Typical walking decks have EPDM or PVC on them. The membrane samples, which are viewable in our gallery, are all PVC membranes that have a non-slip gripping surface.

Advantages:

  • Non-Slip surface
  • No splinters
  • Waterproof
  • Expands & contracts to temperature changes
  • Easy repair

Limitations:

  • Generally more expensive than other products
  • Can be punctured; making it less waterproof.
  • Depending on product seam may be visible
